"If you change nothing, nothing will change." – Tony Robbins
It is particularly important for one to feel connected with and deeply understood by the psychologist that they choose. Our approach to therapy is welcoming, empathetic, collaborative, and draws upon years of experience gained working in outpatient settings, hospitals, and schools. We have extensive experience and training using cognitive-behavioral techniques in working with children, adolescents, adults, and families. We have specialized training in crisis-intervention, individual therapy, family therapy, play-therapy, and in conducting assessments. At Long Island Cognitive Behavioral Psychology, we utilize evidence-based interventions supported by the latest research in our approach to treatment. We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all, cookie-cutter approach to treatment. We individualize the therapy for everyone that we work with, taking into account the individual's wants and needs.
"If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change the way you think about it." - Mary Engelbreit

"If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." - Wayne Dyer
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is an empirically supported approach for the treatment of psychological symptoms. In using CBT, the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors is emphasized and explored. Research shows that our thoughts influence our feelings, and, ultimately, our behaviors. In other words, what a person thinks about a situation, determines their emotional response to the situation. Oftentimes, our past experiences shape our thinking, leading to the automatic generation of negative thoughts, maladaptive cognitive schemas, cognitive distortions, and irrational thinking patterns. These negative thoughts and patterns are the very root of our psychological and emotional difficulties/hardship.
Research shows that if we change the way that we think about a situation, we can change the way we feel about it. In Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, a collaborative relationship between the therapist and the individual is established, where therapy goals are set, and the individual's thoughts and beliefs are identified, explored, and challenged. Thus, through the use of CBT, the individual's negative emotions and behaviors are reduced, leading to improved well-being. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is a goal-oriented, problem solving approach, scientifically proven to reduce emotional distress and its symptoms, and improve overall functioning.
